1 killed, several hurt in Hamburg market knife attack

One person has been stabbed to death in a Hamburg supermarket and four people have been injured after being attacked by a man wielding a knife.

Hamburg police have arrested a suspect after a reported knife attack in which one person was killed.

Germany remains on high alert following several jihadist attacks there and in other European countries.

A 35-year-old man was hurt while overpowering the attacker in the street alongside other passers-by shortly after the killing.

In a press statement, police said that the suspect entered the supermarket, and suddenly began stabbing customers before running off.

The 68-year-old tennis coach was booked into jail on two different charges of sex-related crimes with children. At the time, he worked as a personal tennis coach for the alleged victims, sheriff's officials said.

Police say they don't have any information yet on the man's motive.

The motive for the incident was not immediately clear.

The miscreant soon after the attack reportedly escaped but was later nabbed by the police.

Witnesses followed him and raised the alarm at about 3.10pm before police swooped to make an arrest. Photos and videos showed a large number of emergency services, including a helicopter and heavily-armed police officers, at the scene.
