Rays acquire power-hitting Lucas Duda from Mets

Then the Mets traded their clubhouse favorite to the Rays for relief prospect Drew Smith, and that meant tough goodbyes for some teammates, especially outfielder Curtis Granderson.

Duda, 31, has spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Mets. CBS Sports reported Duda will likely serve as the "spiritual successor" to Colby Rasmus, who walked away from baseball earlier this month and is on the restricted list.

Smith, a 23-year-old right-hander, had most recently been pitching for Double-A Montgomery. There have been rumors that the Rays were interested in both Duda and Addison Reed in recent days, and the trade came together quickly after initial reports of the swap this afternoon. Since the Rays are in NY facing off against the Yankees for a four-game series this weekend, Duda could be available as soon as Friday night. Top prospect Amed Rosario is slated to arrive first, shortly after the trade deadline.

Over 31 combined appearances, he's gone 1-2 with a 1.60 ERA and 0.91 WHIP, walking nine while striking out 40.

With the addition of Duda, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times via Twitter tweets that Duda who is a one-position player (1B), has had limited playing time in the outfield will get the majority of at-bats as the DH and allowing Corey Dickerson more playing time in the outfield.

Duda says he hopes Dom Smith becomes a 10-year All-Star.

This is not the first time the Rays have kicked the tires on Duda. "And I'm going to be very proud to be a Tampa Bay Ray". Back in the clubhouse, the rest of the Mets said goodbye to Duda and wondered who was next.
