United Nations votes to impose new sanctions on North Korea

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed a resolution imposing new sanctions on North Korea for its continued intercontinental ballistic missile testing and violations of UN resolutions. Other countries will also be barred from increasing the "total number of work authorizations", and banned from creating "new joint ventures" with North Korean businesses or people.

As the chairman of Asean, the Philippines in the next few days will host meetings of foreign ministers from 27 countries that include Australia, China, India, Japan, Russia, North and South Korea and the United States, at which Pyongyang's missile tests are expected to take centre stage.

The U.S. drafted the sanctions resolution and negotiated it with China following North Korea's unprecedented test of an ICBM in July and a follow-up test weeks later.

The sanctions ban countries from buying North Korean coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. This represents one-third of last year's exports.

Critics say the outline of key principles is lopsidedly in China's favor and suspect that Beijing may have consented to it to divert protests as it tries to complete and fortify man-made islands in the South China Sea with a missile defense system.

Although China and Russian Federation have pushed for a resumption of the six-party talks with North Korea, disagreement remains on how to bring Washington and Pyongyang to the table.

"The Security Council increased the penalty of North Korea's ballistic missile activity to a whole new level".

USA ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said penalties against the regime have now been taken "to a whole new level" and the Security Council had put the leader "on notice".

The parties attached importance to developing trilateral cooperation (Iran-Armenia-Turkmenistan) in energy sector as well. Trump last month recertified Iran's adherence to the 2015 deal brokered by President Barack Obama.

The United States has called on other countries to stop accepting North Korean workers and is closely watching to see how China responds.

Under the resolution, North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank, which handles foreign exchange, will be added the U.N.'s sanctions list that freezes the assets of targeted entities.

United States and China reiterated support on the implementation of new U.N. Security Council sanctions against North Korea in bilateral talks on Sunday.

Mr Cayetano said that at Indonesia's suggestion, he and his fellow ministers would have an informal meeting last night to talk about North Korea ahead of Monday's Asean Regional Forum (ARF) meeting.

The two drafts highlight China's growing regional clout at a time of uncertainty whether the new U.S. administration will try to check Beijing's assertiveness in the disputed waters.

In a statement issued Friday, a copy of which was posted in the official website of the Chinese Embassy in Manila, Geng noted that the China-ASEAN relations have become "the most dynamic and substantive pair of relations" among ASEAN's relations with its dialogue partners.

Would Tillerson interact with his North Korean counterpart, even informally, if they crossed paths in Manila? In response, South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said the regime's missile launch significantly heightened threats in the region and President Moon was left with no other option. "North Korea should forgo the path of provocation, forgo the path of further escalation".
