Tesla seeking to test driver-free electric trucks on public roads

Tesla is now developing self-driving truck on an electric move, which can move independently or in a convoy following the leading vehicle. Industry rumours say that Tesla is already in talks with authorities of the American states of California and Nevada to permit the trials of its new truck on public roads. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, first announced his intentions to produce a heavy-duty electric truck previous year and tweeted in April that the semi-truck would be unveiled in September 2017. It isn't putting all its testing eggs in the Nevada basket, and is also reported to be in talks with officials in California that a California DMV spokesperson called Jessica Gonzales told Reuters was "to talk about Tesla's efforts with autonomous trucks".

From that it was obvious to us that the technology would be applied to the upcoming Tesla semi truck. No particular date was mentioned, however, as to when this road testing would be.

Tesla is heavily engaged in autonomous driving developments for cars. Last October, the Silicon Valley startup Otto used an autonomous truck to ship beer in Colorado.

Tesla is hardly the first to work on developing driverless trucks.

His remarks came after a meeting with India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in Kathmandu today. India, however, supports Bhutan's claim as both countries share very strong diplomatic relations.

The email exchange shows that the vehicle company is putting self-driving technology into an electric truck, which it plans to unveil in September 2017.

Reuters exclusively reported on Wednesday that Tesla is now developing a self-driving semitruck, which the solar and tech company hopes to test out on Nevada roads. In one of these exchanges, Tesla regulatory official Nasser Zamani wrote to DMV official April Sanborn about the agenda for a July 16 meeting.

Peloton Technology is working with Volvo on a similar platooning system to Tesla's trucks. They declined to comment further. It's unclear whether the lead vehicle would have a driver or operate autonomously with a person in the front seat to monitor safety.

Venkat Viswanathan, a lithium ion battery researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, said that electric long-haul trucking was not yet economically feasible yet, and that the massive batteries required to compete with the 500-mile range of diesel trucks would limit cargo carrying capacity.
