Avoid bomb flash: Guam issues emergency guidelines for potential nuclear attack

Asked if people in Guam should be anxious about North Korea's threats, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters en route to Seattle this week, "No".

North Korea on Thursday announced a detailed plan to launch a volley of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers.

"Our office will be notified from the military and will utilize all forms of mass communication to get the message out to the public", Gaminde said.

"Local media, village mayors and social media would be used to disseminate information. The plan is under consideration, then it's supposed to be handed to Kim Jong Un, then he'll make a decision", Carlin said.

"We need to have our own military options to overwhelm the North", the Korea Economic Daily said in an editorial earlier this week. "We're maintaining normal operations".

Officials have not raised the USA territory's threat level after Pyongyang said it had laid out plans to strike near the island in the coming weeks.

"The way our infrastructure is built - an 8.3 quake a decade ago, powerful typhoons - they are well-equipped to coordinate both pre-event and also post-event", he said.

Six B-1B bombers, each capable of carrying up to 84 missiles, are stationed at Guam's military base.

Guam's faced previous threats of a rocket attack from North Korea, which has been conducting frequent tests of its nuclear missile capability. The tiny island is home to major United States air and naval facilities.

It's not the first time North Korea has threatened Guam, which is a crucial, strategic hub for USA forces in the Pacific.

The authorities ask the public to help identify the jogger , who was filmed shoving the woman in front of a bus on Putney Bridge. The firm said today Mr Bellquist has "irrefutable proof" he was in the United States at the time of the May 5 incident.

Like other US territories, Guam has a sometimes complicated relationship with the USA mainland but many across the island say despite the threats and concerns they feel reassured and protected by the military - especially in times of tense, geopolitical sparring.

"I don't think there's anything to worry about".

Japan's missile defences include sea and land components.

Japan's ability to destroy North Korean missiles in its airspace as they are ascending has been called into question. If carried out, it would be the North's most provocative missile launch to date.

The unsettling document also instructs Guamanians to dispose of their clothes and wash heavily if they were outside during or after missiles hit the island, as this would help "remove radioactive material that may have settled on your body".

President Donald Trump on Friday again delivered a warning to North Korea, tweeting that the USA military is "locked and loaded" if the isolated rogue nation acts "unwisely", escalating an exchange of threats between the nuclear-armed nations. And if North Korea's missiles prove no match for US interceptors, Kim Jong Un might be chastened into thinking twice before conducting any more.

People familiar with the contacts say the interactions have done nothing thus far to quell tensions over North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile advances, which are now fueling fears of military confrontation.

"It's gotten progressively worse over the last 20 years", Peterson said. Along with a bigger set of manoeuvrs held every spring, the exercises are routinely met by strong condemnation and threats of countermeasures from North Korea. Peterson said he reserves judgment, stating that everyone responds differently to a bully.

"While we have heard threats like this in the past, I take them very seriously and continue to engage with our DOD partners to ensure that Guam and our people remain safe", she said, adding that Trump's statements "concerning and unhelpful".

The Korea Herald wrote in an editorial on Friday that Seoul needed nuclear weapons to defend itself against the North.
