Derek Jeter's Group Buying Marlins For $1.2 Billion

Jeter has not been shy about his desire to own a baseball team.

Miami Marlins president David Samson confirmed that the team has reached a sales agreement with a group that includes Derek Jeter.

New York-based venture capitalist Bruce Sherman is leading the purchase group. But Jeter likely will be the face of the franchise and will run the baseball and business operations.

Haase said it was hard for both players after playing tough three-set matches against seeded players earlier in the week. But Shapovalov broke again in the ninth game and clinically served out to the delight of the crowd.

If reports are correct, "The Captain" is going to get his shot to show off what he learned from "The Boss", who was always a domineering presence in the Yankees organization. The legendary player has owned the Charlotte Bobcats for several seasons. No word on how much Jordan will be putting in the pot, but regardless of how much he contributes, it's safe to say that the Miami will soon be a Jumpman city.

But for most Marlins fans, just punting Loria out the door is a victory in and of itself.

However, it may be too early for Miami fans to celebrate just yet. There could be moves made this off-season, if the ownership group is approved by Major League Baseball. Jeter is expected to have a title such as CEO or team president and have active involvement, though his relatively low personal investment - $25M according to sources - would not qualify him to be designated as the control person by Major League Baseball. The Marlins have a new stadium, are in a potentially valuable market, and there are far more rich individuals who want to buy a sports team than there are available teams.
