Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill elects to have season-ending knee surgery

Tannehill will be placed on IR and miss the entire 2017 season, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.

Jay Cutler, who parted with the Chicago Bears after eight seasons, agreed to delay his fledgling network TV career and signed a $10 million, one-year contract Monday to replace Tannehill. The 29-year-old will aim to return to the field in 2018.

After conversations with Dolphins team staff members and doctors, Tannehill chose to have reconstructed knee surgery. It's unfortunate for him.

Tannehill, who missed the final four games of last season with two sprained ligaments in his knee, reinjured it a week into training camp on August 3.

Last season, Cutler played in just five games because of thumb and shoulder injuries.

Coutinho Hands in Transfer Request, Wants Barca Move
But there are conflicting reports over Coutinho's transfer request, with a number of reliable Liverpool sources rubbishing Sky's report.

That decision, made in consultation with the Dolphins and medical advisers, appeared to prove costly last week when Tannehill went down, untouched, while running toward the sideline. Brandon Doughty and David Fales are further down the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart.

Tannehill completed 67.1 percent of his passes past year, throwing for 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a career-best 93.5 passer rating in 13 games.

Per Pro Football Focus' Ryan Smith, Tannehill finished third out of 37 qualified quarterbacks in overall grade when he released the ball in 2.5 seconds or less.

"It was probably tougher for me", Gase said.
