Photo of purported Walmart gun display roils social media

But the Post later spoke with the woman behind the initial photograph, who confirmed to the publication that the picture was taken at the IN store. Did an employee deliberately or inadvertently place the "Own the School Year" sign on the wrong display?

"We have definite proof it was a prank", Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson told The Associated Press on Friday evening.

Leeanna May told the Post she took the photo and that she was in Evansville when she did it.

Walmart, the largest seller of guns and ammunition in the U.S., said it was looking into whether the sign was placed there by mistake, or if it was done by a customer as prank.

"We have already lost so many innocent lives to guns", she said.

'People don't seem to honestly care, ' May noted.

"We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened".

Global stocks fall on Trump's North Korea warning; US$ up after data
US crude CLcv1 fell 0.55 percent to $49.12 per barrel and Brent LCOcv1 was last at $52.03, down 0.65 percent on the day. The Dow slumped by 1.1 percent, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 tumbled by 1.5 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.

Walmart is the largest retailer for guns and ammunition in the United States.

People cried foul on Twitter and demanded an explanation from Walmart. HOW tone deaf can a corp be?,' one Twitter user asked incredulously.

That tweet, though, wasn't the first time Walmart heard about the signage situation.

The photo has been making the rounds on social media, drawing comments of outrage and mentions of school shootings.

Walmart were previously criticised for staking crates of Coca-Cola Zero to resemble the World Trade Centre as part of a campaign to commemorate 9/11.

Though Walmart officials scratched the IN store off its list, Leeanna May, who told The Washington Post she snapped the now-viral photo, maintained that the "disgusting" display was at a location IN Evansville.
