United States airstrike kills several civilians in Afghanistan

The United States military has deployed Special Forces and airstrikes against Islamic State group militants in Afghanistan and said it has killed dozens of the group's leaders and hundreds of fighters this year. All the victims, which included women and children, were civilians and they were from one family.

"There was zero chance of civilian casualties", the statement adds.

"This is the second false claim of civilian casualties in the same district within the last three weeks", Purtiman noted.

Afghan officials had said at least 16 civilians, including women and children, were killed on Thursday when a private vehicle was struck in Haska Mina district in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The latest victims died Thursday afternoon when the vehicles they were traveling in were hit by US airstrikes believed to be targeting Islamic State militants in the area, Wali said.

"In the strike, five insurgents were killed and two others were wounded".
