SC asks Karti Chidambaram to appear before CBI

There were several oral observations made by the Supreme Court which directed Karti Chidambaram to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation.

This comes in connection with the agencies' probe into the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media for allegedly receiving funds from Mauritius.

A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud allowed Karti to be accompanied by a lawyer at the CBI headquarters during the questioning.

Karti didn't show up when he was summoned by the CBI for questioning before, first on May 18 and then May 21.

A lookout notice was recently put out for him at airports, which would prevent him from flying overseas. While INX Media, which was then run by Peter Mukherjea and his wife Indrani Mukherjea, had approval for foreign investment worth Rs 4.62 crore, it had managed to raise around Rs 305 crore in 2007 through "influence in the finance ministry".

Karti, before the apex court, alleged that he was being harassed in order to target his father.

Karti responded saying that he had no problem in appearing before the court, however, he would need protection. His council also argued that it has become a fashion for the CBI to target the relatives of prominent politicians. To this Subramanium said, "I (Karti) am ready to appear today itself". The law officer submitted that the "investigation is at a very, very initial stage and there is material substantiating the charges in the FIR" against Karti and some others in the case. "LOC is issued because of the apprehension that somebody may not comply with the summons".

The court was hearing a plea by Karti Chidambaram challenging a look-out notice issued against him in relation to the corruption case being investigated by the CBI.

The look out notice was issued on 16 June and prevented Karti Chidambaram from leaving the country so that he could be present to participate in the ongoing investigation against him.
