Star Wars Find the Force event is an augmented reality treasure hunt

"The Last Jedi", the eighth movie in the "Star Wars" film saga, arrives in theaters in December.

If you've ever wanted to meet Star Wars characters, a Disney promo with Apple and other retail stores will offer the chance to do the next best thing. Collecting characters in the app doesn't unlock much beyond promotional clips.

Luckily for George Lucas, Fox didn't give a hoot about toy licensing for the original Star Wars, but Disney sure as hell does.

It's shaping up to be the biggest one yet, as the Mouse House prepares to launch a suite of new toy products inspired by Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi - perhaps it'll include the newly-unveiled Dreadnought warship and AT-M6s?

Here's the deal: When you head out to one of some 20,000 retailers around the country starting on September 1, you'll find special stand-up posters with a unique "find the force" mark.

The app also lets you record videos and share the experience with your unlocked character on social media.

Disney will certainly not need to rely on Jedi mind tricks to peddle the products, as the "Star Wars" franchise brought in $1.5 billion in sales over 2015 and 2016. You'll be able to scan new in-store physical displays that feature characters like Rey and the new "Executioner Stormtrooper", and those characters will come to life on your screen, Pokémon-style.

Fans can download the latest version of the Star Wars App (v. 2.3 or higher) beginning August 24 for an early look at the new Porg characters in AR before the AR treasure hunt goes live at retail on September 1. Speaking of that glorious late autumn day, those who use specific hashtags when sharing their in-store experiences on Instagram and Twitter will become sweepstakes participants, with the grand prize being the enviable opportunity to view "The Last Jedi" premiere.
