Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell explains basis for $17M demands

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell put a priority on his health when he chose to skip nearly all of his team's offseason activities in preparation for the 2017 regular season.

Bell was not required to participate in any of the Steelers offseason program, and did not officially report to the team until September 1. That deadline-date offer was a five-year deal and reportedly would have paid Bell more than any running back in the National Football League, including guaranteeing him at least $37 million in the first three years of the deal. Bell has finished second on the Steelers in receiving in two of the last three seasons.

That decision could backfire on him if he's not ready to go by the season opener.

Bell was said to have turned down a contract that would have paid him over $12 million per season.

"I wanted to make sure I was fresh for the season", Bell said Monday, per Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Instead, he made it clear there are no hard feelings between himself and the organization, and that the focus now is on winning games, not his contract. When I went to practice today they gave me my normal reps like I have been doing in practice last year, the year before that. "I wanted to get ready for game one, the games that count and go out there and try to win a Super Bowl".

"I feel good", Bell told NFL Network".

However, Hummels helped the world champions seal the match when his powerful header hit the net with just two minutes left. Ozil sliced open the Czech defence with a trademark throughball with the outside of his boot that Werner finished off well.

Staying healthy - Bell has missed 16 regular season games in four seasons because of injuries and suspensions - was one of the reasons why he didn't report to the Steelers and sign his franchise tender earlier.

The Steelers also noted that they have received a two-week roster exemption for Bell.

Le'Veon Bell is learning the difference between being in shape and being in pro football shape.

So if he gets what he wants, $17 million a year might not be out of the question. Obviously I understand I'm on a one-year deal, so I have to go out there and prepare and play football.

Brock Osweiler passed his physical and signed his contract to return to Denver after an 18-month odyssey that included dismissals by the Texans and Browns but also a $37 million windfall.
