FPL: Power To Be Restored To South Florida By End Of Weekend

Work crews can spend hours turning on the lights to a handful of homes.

FP&L officials say no power generation facilities - including its nuclear reactors - were significantly damaged by Hurricane Irma.

In the early morning hours today, the massive restoration operation across Florida Power & Light Company's 35-county service area in response to Hurricane Irma surpassed 3 million customers restored, with thousands more being restored by the hour.

Volenec outlined the steps FPL is taking to restore power in Volusia. Over 60,000 restoration workers from more than 250 utilities in the US and Canada have answered the call to respond to Irma throughout the southeastern part of the country.

"Just because you don't see a crew near you doesn't mean they are not working", Mauldin said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, FPL's website showed 183,100 of its 210,700 Collier County customers were still without power. "Substations are the backbone of our system". 112 hospitals also had service again.

Facebook hasn't clarified how many of these events were created on its platform, and whether they've already taken place. Facebook only removed the group last month.

As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, 284,800 homes and businesses were without power in Broward County and 509,760 had been restored; 261,680 in Palm Beach County were out of power and 419,110 restored; and 378,850 were out of power in Miami-Dade County and 641,390 had been restored. More than 21,500 personnel continue to work to restore the remaining approximately 1.4 million customers without power.

Areas hit by tornadoes, flooding and severe damage from Hurricane Irma may have to wait longer for electrical service, FPL officials added. It also asked customers to not stop technicians to ask them when service will be restored because it slows down progress.

Gould said there is no need to call FPL about outages, because "the smart grid network that we have in place lets us know when a customer is out of power".

County Manager Jim Dinneen said complete restoration of power is going to take time.

Despite about 2 million in FPL's territory being out of power on Wednesday, Gould said the electric grid held up well.

From here, we fix the infrastructure serving smaller groups and neighborhoods, converging on the hardest-hit areas until every customer's power is restored. In addition, with the hurricane carrying such high winds this time around, there are more downed trees and utility lines affecting power repairs. "The number of poles down appears to be significantly less than what we expected to see", said Gould.
