Frank Vincent, Actor Who Portrayed Dapper Mobsters, Dies

Veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese paid an emotional tribute to famed onscreen tough guy Frank Vincent, saying the actor was someone "I could count on".

Vincent had small roles in two Spike Lee films, "Do the Right Thing" and "Jungle Fever", and also was in "The Pope of Greenwich Village", "Last Exit to Brooklyn", "Night Falls on Manhattan" and "Shark Tale", among his more than 50 movies.

Frank Vincent, an American actor, has passed away at the age of 80 years old.

Vincent died peacefully on Wednesday, a statement from his family said.

That film gave Vincent perhaps his most memorable line, in the role of Billy Batts, a mobster who profanely invites Pesci's character to go home and get his shine box, an insult that proved fatal. "He was a natural who was at ease in front of the camera - on a set or on a stage", he wrote.

In addition to his work with Scorsese, Vincent was also known for his role as mob boss Phil Leotardo in the later seasons of The Sopranos.

Said Vincent of Scorsese in a 2011 interview, "Marty has a knack for ... picking people who are really not that well known and to develop them as actors".

Vincent started as a musician, playing drums for such acts as Paul Anka and Del Shannon.

Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, Vincent made a number of TV appearance and even voiced characters for the Grand Theft Auto series of video games.
