Alexander, who stresses that details of the case are still evolving, says that "pledging and all social activities on and off campus" have been suspended and that school authorities "are investigating this matter with the utmost seriousness".

While Alexander on Thursday emphasized the circumstances of Gruver's death are still under investigation by LSU Police, he said "hazing is unsafe, irresponsible and unacceptable, and it will not be tolerated at LSU, period".

Phi Delta Theta, which was founded in 1848 and now has 183 chapters across the United States and Canada, became the largest fraternity to implement an alcohol-free housing policy starting in 2000. He also called the teenager's death "tragic and untimely", according to NBC11.

The fraternity did not have any registered or scheduled events with the school on September 13, the night before Gruver died, officials said.

Just past year, LSU officials put the fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha on probation after two new members were sent to the hospital in the spring, KATC reported. It was founded on campus in 1938, according to LSU's Division of Student Affairs.
