"Blade Runner Black Out 2022" will be released via the Sony Pictures Japan YouTube channel on September 26.

Shinichirō Watanabe, the director of beloved anime Cowboy Bebop, is set to direct Blade Runner 2022 Black Out-an animated prequel for the upcoming Denis Villeneuve live-action Blade Runner 2049.

The film is supposed to explain what happened from the original, Harrison Ford/Ridley Scott masterpiece, up to the new film, Blade Runner 2049. After the first film about the enigmatic antagonist of the film played by Jared Leto, this is the one dedicated to Dave Bautista, whose imposing stature will take on the role of the mysterious Sapper.

Sony Pictures Japan has dropped a teaser of the anime, which shows concept art, sketches, and a few seconds of animation.

None of the characters are familiar faces, though that's to be expected.

The Blade Runner anime, titled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, will bring new elements to the franchise in its search to be something fresh instead of an imitation.
