Newcastle United clinch third consecutive win by overcoming Stoke City

The Magpies saw off Stoke City 2-1 on Saturday to improve their Premier League points tally to nine points from five games, a tally they last managed to reach this early in the season when they finished fifth in the top flight under Alan Pardew in 2012.

Goals from Christian Atsu and inspirational captain Jamaal Lascelles were enough to overcome a fantastic strike from Xherdan Shaqiri and some extremely wasteful play from Newcastle striker Joselu.

"We have to keep working hard and we know what we have in the team and the squad". It was a little bit different for us as Newcastle sat back, and they've got decent pace.

"We had clear-cut chances with Choupo-Moting and Diouf".

Grant even conveyed his feelings that he is hopeful that Pakistan will soon be able to play Test cricket on its home soil. South African batsman Hashim Amla led the way with the bat for the World XI with a brilliant 72 not out.

Stoke were guilty of missed opportunities, with Rob Elliot making a number of outstanding saves, though Newcastle also spurned a number of opportunities.

Lascelles' goal secured the three points for Newcastle United, as Stoke City failed to score an equalizing goal until the referee blew the full-time whistle.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes was disappointed not to come away with anything as his side lost for the first time since the opening day of the campaign, but urged his players to learn the lessons of their reverse on Tyneside.

"They can enjoy it, we have to enjoy it, but we have to be sure that the next training session, we start correcting things and improving things and doing things in the way we are doing things at the moment".
