USA options on North Korea 'effective and overwhelming': Donald Trump

"The United Kingdom stands with the people of Japan in face of this awful, egregious, illegal, provocative, reckless act by the North Korean regime, which once again demonstrates their complete disregard for the sovereignty and the citizens of one of their neighbours", the British Ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft told reporters after the meeting of the Security Council.

"If North Korea continues to walk down this path, it has no bright future". He backed up his words with action, ordering a test launch of South Korean missiles into the sea, on a trajectory precisely long enough to have wiped out the launch site for North Korea's ICBM if the weapons were aimed in that direction.

President Donald Trump has derided the U.N for its "utter weakness and incompetence" and even pledged to cut USA taxpayer funding that contributes to its budget. Relaxing the last of these principles would enable Japan to reintroduce U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to Japan, not only bolstering Japan's ability (with United States support) to deter North Korea, but also importantly reinforcing the commitment by Washington to defend Japan.

The Trump administration appears to be reaching its limit with North Korea. Trump has lambasted a United Nations sanctions package against North Korea passed this week that he says is "not a big deal" that might not have "any impact".

Nebenzia urged North Korea to "stop it" and said the only political proposal to resolve the standoff was the joint Russian-Chinese "freeze for freeze". Though they aren't their top choices for the region, Haley and McMaster said, they are available to the President.

Finally, on Thursday the President will meet with the leaders of Turkey, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, before South Korea and Japan, with which he will discuss the world's "most urgent and unsafe security problem", North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for new sanctions "to be firmly imposed" in response to the latest North Korean missile test that violated Japanese airspace. "China and Russian Federation must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own", Tillerson demanded. Dictator Kim Jong-un has repeatedly threatened to attack both Guam and Japan with missiles, possibly using nuclear warheads. "So, having said that, I have no problem with kicking it to (Defense Secretary James) Mattis because I think he has plenty of options".

The emergency meeting of Security Council was convened at the request of Japan and the US. That launch came less than two weeks after Pyongyang staged its most powerful nuclear test yet.

The latest missile test raises therefore important questions about the credibility of U.S. extended deterrence and the protective strategic umbrella that America provides to Japan and South Korea. She expected a Trump call for maximum pressure on North Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also called for "new measures" against North Korea and said, "These continued provocations only deepen North Korea's diplomatic and economic isolation". Washington has tried to work with Beijing to restrain the latter's ally in Pyongyang through economic sanctions.

"For those who have been commenting about the lack of a military option, there is a military option", he said.
