Texas was supposed to be vulnerable.

Texas jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime then held off Iowa State in the second half to claim a 17-7 victory in a mistake filled Big 12 opener in Jack Trice Stadium. The main takeaway is that the Longhorns' formula going forward is to win with defense.

"Iowa State's sports teams have been known as the Cyclones since 1895 when Coach Pop Warner's team upset Northwestern 36-0 and a Chicago Tribune headline the next day reported "Struck by a Cyclone: It comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town". The ugly wins still count, of course, but it's probably not the kind of triumphant return to conference play that former Cyclones assistant turned UT head coach Tom Herman wanted in Ames after a bye week. Quarterback Jacob Park was intercepted three times and the Cyclones managed only 10 yards of rushing. But the Longhorn defense put heavy pressure on USC redshirt sophomore quarterback Sam Darnold and forced two interceptions, ultimately establishing a new standard for the entire team.

Against an Iowa State offense that came in averaging 6.5 yards per play and 41 points per game, they allowed four yards per play and a single touchdown.

We wanted to set the record straight with fans on why we were doing it and move forward". "It was an open-forum conversation", Joseph said.

But, the running game was inept and the offensive line self-destructed in the third quarter. The win was not pretty, but sometimes an ugly win is just a win. But, they have a lot of work to do on offense to compete with the high-powered offenses coming up in the conference. That's what the Big 12 offenses are set up to do, but when you're flying around like we did tonight.

When Iowa State got across midfield, it had a hard time getting to third and manageable situations. Nine plays later, the Longhorns scored on an 11-yard run by junior Chris Warren III. A big reason for that is senior wide receiver Allen Lazard, a preseason All-American who has 19 receptions for 178 yards and three touchdowns and is the active NCAA career leader in consecutive games with a reception (38).

We're still a little bit from game time so we don't know for sure how this one will play out just yet, but one thing we do know is that when these teams do hit the field in Ames for this showdown, the Cyclones will be looking fresh as ever.
