Republican senator seeks probe of gun devices at Las Vegas shooting

In a Wednesday, Oct. 4, press conference, Jill Snider, Special Agent in Charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) San Francisco office, said that when authorities reached the gunman's hotel room, they found an arsenal that included 12 semi-automatic rifles equipped with after-market attachments called bump fire stocks.

Many Democrats have long called for much stricter gun laws.

"All of those kinds of weapons and devices accelerated and enhanced the ability of that shooter in Las Vegas to kill so many people", he continued, noting that he believes there will be a consensus amongst lawmakers on bump stock legislation.

The National Rifle Association, which spearheads America's powerful gun lobby that has blocked all attempts to tighten gun laws for decades, has relented in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre and asked the government to review the sale of devices that allow weapons to shoot rapidly.

They're considering a ban on "bump fire stocks", attachments that modify guns to fire nearly like fully automatic weapons.

During a press briefing on Thursday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that the White House would be open to such a conversation. "That's - we're all just beginning to go through that analysis", he said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told MSNBC changing the law is "something we need to look into".

"I think we are on the verge of a breakthrough when it comes to sensible gun policy", Curbelo told reporters Thursday.

Justice Department officials said it was stepping up efforts to trace guns used in violent crime. Some Republicans also conceded, in an equally significant shift for them, that there is a need to take a look at the devices and consider regulating them.

The endorsement of regulations for "bump stock" came simultaneously on Thursday, from The National Rifle Association and the White House.

Feinstein, a prominent advocate for gun control, already has legislation to ban bump stocks. "I don't know what the answer is as to what happened in Vegas", Wayland said. The killer in Las Vegas apparently used the legal bump stock devices on legal rifles, essentially converting them into automatic weapons, which are banned.

Other Republican senators, including Orrin Hatch of Utah and John Thune of South Dakota, said they are considering whether changes are needed.

The only place to shoot a gun, like an AR-10, legally is at a gun range.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has introduced a bill that would ban devices created to allow a semiautomatic weapon to simulate full-auto speed.
