Paul Scholes holds talks over Oldham Athletic manager's job

It would be a hard situation for a managerial debut with Oldham sitting at 19th in League One, and also considering that current caretaker manager, also an ex-United player in Richie Wellens, has done a solid job thus far.

Scholes, 42, has yet to try his hand at football management but has held coaching roles at Manchester United whilst also becoming a pundit and owner of non-league club Salford City.

Wellens, who retired as a player last season, has stated that he would like to be given the job on a full-time basis after leading the club out of the relegation zone.

The club's board will now have to decide whether or not to give Wellens the job or go with the big-named former worldwide superstar.

Oldham are 19th in League One and next play Blackburn on Saturday.

Work was due to get underway this year but the project was delayed due to a legal challenge to its planning permission. Planning approval was quickly granted before objections were lodged on environmental grounds.

It was reported in some corners on Wednesday that Scholes has had a meeting with Oldham regarding becoming their new manager.

Paul Scholes has held talks with Oldham Athletic over the vacant manager's job at Boundary Park.

With Richies Wellens having made a positive impact during his short interim stint, however, will certainly make the decision for the Latics' board a hard one.

After making his Manchester United debut in 1994, Scholes went on to make 717 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 155 goals before retiring in 2013.

He won 11 Premier League titles at Old Trafford and was capped 66 times by England before announcing his retirement in 2004.
