Teens Get Their Own Amazon Accounts, With Parents' Approval

Amazon has introduced a new way for teenagers to shop on Amazon using a unique login.

But fret not, kids aren't given carte blanche to buy what they want - parents are able to decide on an approval process. Overall, she sees it as a positive for parents and teens.

On top of the usual perks of a Prime membership - including free two-day shipping and access to Prime Video's streamable movies and TV shows - the company says Prime Students will get access to special deals, or "coupons", through their subscription. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents", said Michael Carr, vice president, Amazon Households. Amazon, which already offered discounted Amazon Music Unlimited service for college students in the past, is now discounting its Prime service, as well.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is now allowing teens to make their own accounts on its website. From there, the teenager is free to create their own username and password and then use that to log into the Amazon App.

Parents can sign up to either pre-approve each order via text or email (the default), set a spending limit for each order or to automatically approve all purchases.

To get the ball rolling, parents must enter their kids' contact information, and indicate which of their payment cards is to be used for purchases.

Opportunities existing in e-commerce have obviously made it hard for traditional retailers to attract teen shoppers, who tend to have indecisive tastes and are notoriously unpredictable.
