Gunfight in India's Darjeeling kills police officer

A policeman was killed and several police personnel were injured on Friday in clashes with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters loyal to party supremo Bimal Gurung at a forest in the Darjeeling hills.

One police officer was killed and four others were injured on Friday in a gunfight with suspected separatists in Darjeeling, the famous tea-growing region of eastern India that has been roiled by protests in recent months.

Acting on an information that Gurung was hiding in the area, the police conducted raids during which the GJM leader's supporters fired and pelted stones, they said, adding that the clashes are still on.

Though Union home minister Rajnath Singh appealed to Gurung to withdraw the indefinite strike in Darjeeling, the Centre must now decide if it wants to involve a "fugitive" in the discussions, said an officer in Kolkata, asking not to be named.

The West Bengal government will do all that is necessary to arrest Gurung, he added. Over a specific information that he had returned to Darjelling, the police raided the Takvar area near Patlibash. The GJM cadres retaliated after police opened fire, sources said. However, Gurung has reportedly escaped from the spot. They have also recovered explosives such as crude bombs and local pistols.

Would you board Flight 666 to HEL on Friday the 13th?
The Helsinki airport says Flight 666 has arrived safety in HEL - the airport code for the Finnish capital - for the last time. However, jesters and credulous folk can still get their kicks on another flight going from SIN to HEL - Singapore to Helsinki.

It must be noted that cornered GJM chief Bimal Burung has been on the run since the Bengal police slapped a warrant against him under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

That angered the state's roughly 1.8 million-strong Gorkha population, who speak Nepali.

The GJM is an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The long running shutdown has also resulted in severe loss to the economy of the region that is dependent on summer tourism.

Gurung was now trying to get back to Sikkim, he said.
