India's Supreme Court refuses to lift ban on firecrackers in Delhi

After the Supreme Court on Monday banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) during Diwali this year to check air pollution level, the Delhi police is all set to take action against anyone found selling and purchasing firecrackers online.

"We are pained at communal remarks on the verdict".

The apex court has said that people can burst firecrackers which they have purchased before its order banning the sale came into effect.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday witnessed group of traders seeking a modification in its order on its October 9 order of ban on sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR till November 1.

The city administration has allowed those residents who have brought Diwali firecrackers in advance to burn them between 6 pm to 10 pm on October 19.

SCA rejects Zuma's spy tapes appeal
On Friday, Judge Eric Leach read an excerpt of the SCA judgment, written by Judge Mahomed Navsa. Advocate Kemp J Kemp, counsel for Zuma, made the same concession.

It had said its November 11, 2016 order suspending the licences "should be given one chance to test itself" to see if there would be a positive effect of this, particularly during Diwali.

Lawyer Deepak Chauhan, representing trader Rajesh Kalia and several others, said that a huge amount of money has been invested by them after their licences were revived and the recent order of the apex court would cause huge losses to them.

The top court had recently imposed the ban on fireworks until November 1, saying it wanted to test if it would make a difference to Delhi's air quality, ranked among the worst in the world. Every year, Diwali celebrations leave the atmosphere in Delhi thick with lethal smoke and suspended dust particles, and people are complaining of lung difficulties and breathlessness.

The outlaw will now go only after November 1, 2017.

Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil.
