New Orleans Police Officer Shot And Killed

A police officer was shot and killed by a suspect in New Orleans early Friday morning, officials have confirmed. The officer who was struck was rushed to University Medical Center, where he died.

Harrison said he has met with the officer's family and that "they're in our prayers".

Chief Michael Harrison says the officer was one of four patrolling the area.

"One, possibly two officers, returned fire, perhaps striking the subject, and our officer collapsed right there on the scene", Harrison said.

"This hurts", said Harrison.

The suspect fled to a nearby building.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 6800 block of Cindy Place, about a block off the I-10. New Orleans SWAT surrounded the building and were able to get the suspect to peacefully surrender, Harrison said.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the shooting occurred at about 12:14 a.m. The NOPD, Louisiana State Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the scene. He was being treated at a local hospital early Friday.

"Our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
