'Sharif to skip court proceedings in Panama Papers case today'

An anti-corruption court Friday delayed the indictment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his other family members following a clash between police and ruling party supporters in the capital Islamabad, local media reported.

A Pakistani court has delayed the indictment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter and son-in-law on corruption charges following clashes between his supporters and police.

The lawyers alleged that they were manhandled by the security forces outside the court and prevented them from entering the courtroom.

Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Capt Safdar have arrived at the court amid tight security and extensive protocol for the hearing of three graft references.

On last hearing, Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar was granted baile appeared in a reference filed by the NAB regarding Avenfield apartments in London.

The police had only allowed selected persons to enter the complex.

Safdar through his counsel filed a petition in the high court, requesting it to restrain a trial court from indicting him and his wife on Oct 13.

As a result of the ruckus, Judge Bashir chose to end court proceedings for the day and asked both defendants to leave the courtroom and return for the hearing on October 19.

It had also ordered NAB to initiate the process of declaring Sharif's sons - Hassan and Hussain - proclaimed offenders, for consistently skipping court proceedings in the graft references pertaining to the Park Lane flats and the establishment of offshore companies.

Judge Bashir left the court room and later announced the postponement of the hearing till October 19.

According to the affixed warrants of Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz outside court, they will be declared fugitives if they don't appear before accountability court within the duration of one month.

Sharif, 67, was disqualified by the country's top court in the Panama Papers scandal in July this year.

Later, an advocate, Naeem Gujar, filed an application to the judge for an inquiry into the incident.

NAB's Rawalpindi branch prepared two references regarding the Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metals Establishment, and the almost dozen companies owned by the Sharif family.
