Chicago fires two officers in United Airlines passenger removal case

David Dao, 69, was dragged off a United Airlines flight when he refused to give up his seat for a crew member.TwitterChicago's Department of Aviation has fired two of three officers involved in dragging David Dao, 69, off a United Airlines plane in April.

Dr. Dao was dragged off of an overbooked United Airlines flight in April of 2017.

The Chicago Tribune reported the Chicago Department of Aviation fired the two officers involved today.

Two other agents have been suspended, the office added.

The report did not reveal the identities of the officers.

United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, who issued a public apology for the incident, said the carrier would no longer allow officers to remove passengers in overbooking situations. Videos of the incident went viral.

An investigation by the city's Office of Inspector General found that three aviation security officers and one aviation security sergeant "mishandled" the situation, according to the office's third-quarter report.

Following the investigation's findings, Chicago's Department of Aviation (CDA) chose to terminate one officer, whose excessive force resulted in serious injuries.

Dao, a physician, was bloodied and yanked off the United Express plane by Chicago airport officers who were summoned by United employees when Dao wouldn't give up his seat.

"The investigation also uncovered that the employees made misleading statements and deliberately removed material facts from their reports", according to Inspector General Joseph Ferguson's quarterly report.

Dao later reached a settlement of an undisclosed amount with the airline.

Thomas Demetrio, the lawyer the represented Dao, said news of the officers' termination was not cause for celebration on the part of his client, "who is neither vindictive nor happy about Mr. Ferguson's findings".

There is a lesson to be learned here for police officers at all levels. "Our cellphones are the best deterrent to ensure mistreatment becomes a rarity".

"Make completely clear through markings, procedures, and training, that the Aviation Security Division provides security services for airport staff and passenger safety, not police services", the report read.
