Minneapolis Councilmember-elect Jenkins reflects on win, future goals

According to the Post, Roem said on Tuesday night, as her margin of victory became clear, "Discrimination is a disqualifier". She says she was afraid that racism and transphobia would work against her, "and my community absolutely proved me wrong". The city needs affordable health care, affordable housing and police accountability, she said. She is the first transgender person elected to a major city's governing body.

Sara McBride, press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, celebrated Jenkins' win on Twitter by saying: "History tonight in Minnesota as Andrea Jenkins wins a seat on the Minneapolis City Council, becoming the first out Black trans woman elected to public office in America".

Jenkins won her seat convincingly, snagging a whopping 73.1% of first preference votes.

Marshall, who referred to himself as Virginia's "chief homophobe," refused to publicly debate Roem.

Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, President and CEO of Victory Fund, a PAC dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders, cheered Jenkins' victory.

On Tuesday night in Minnesota, Andrea Jenkins won a Minneapolis City Council seat, making her the first openly trans woman of color elected to any US public office, and one of two trans women to win on Election Night 2017.

As an aide to Glidden and previous Eighth Ward council member Robert Lilligren, Jenkins worked to revitalize the neighborhood with small businesses and arts venues, and helped organize a Trans* Equity Summit.

2017 set to be globally one of hottest years on record
Arctic sea-ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea-ice extent was at or near a record low. From November 2016 to June 2017, nearly 761,000 displaced people were recorded by the UNHCR to be drought-related.

One political researcher estimates that there are at least 29 openly transgender politicians running races in the USA during the 2017 and 2018 elections.

Jenkins, who is also an award-winning poet, writer, and performance artist, makes history alongside Danica Roem, a transgender woman who won a seat in Virginia's legislature. Roem's campaign focused on jobs, schools and traffic problems rather than gender identity.

"When people do try to enact policies that are going to be detrimental to these communities, I can be that voice to derail that, to stop that, to resist".

"Across the country right now, we're seeing politicians focusing on divisiveness and anti-equality rhetoric, when voters just want ways to improve their lives", Imse said.

The 65-year-old candidate lives in Palm Springs with her wife Cheryl, a place she considers more trans-friendly than other areas of the USA where transgender politicians are running.

It adds to a banner night for transgender people in public office.

Lisa Middleton became the first transgender person elected to a non-judicial office in California.
