The best and worst uses of Twitter's new 280-character limit

Japanese, Korean and Chinese users will still only have 140 characters. The idea that Twitter users will automatically keep to 140 characters, when they have a full 280 characters to play with, defeats Twitter's own objective of increasing the character length in the first place.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) users across the world are now able to express themselves with more characters.

When the expansion was first announced as a test in September, Twitter cited data that showed how users did with the original character limit. Twitter expects users to go back to normal tweeting habits after the initial excitement wears off.

However, the move was welcomed by German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach, who have had trouble fitting the full official name of their club into past tweets.

During the third quarter, Twitter averaged 330 million monthly users, up just 1 per cent from the previous quarter.

Yahoo had bumped its estimate of affected accounts from a previous 1B to all of them (3B in total). Russian Federation has denied trying to influence the US election in any way.

Others were not as excited, including at least one person who repeated the words of Shakespeare: "Brevity is the soul of wit".

"We don't yet know how the behaviour of our community will change when they begin to use our updated application", he said.

"People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall". Even before it did so, users found creative ways to get around the limit. At the time, MoonPie said it didn't want to take advantage of the new character limit, explaining that "most enjoy traditional tweets with brevity".

Twitter, meanwhile, appears also to be banking that by freeing users from the 140-character straitjacket, its platform will gain in popularity.
