Tons Of Prescription Drugs Collected In DEA Take Back

Unwanted or expired prescription medications were collected a few weeks ago for the 14th National Prescription Take-Back Day. Schmidt's office says if you still have unwanted or expired prescriptions, many local law enforcement agencies can accept them.

The San Francisco Division collected 15.5 tons of prescription drugs during the Take Back event at its 150 collection sites.

DEA 360 calls for coordinated, aggressive law enforcement, educational programs and a partnership with the medical community to avoid patients getting addicted to prescription drugs. "By taking risky drugs off of our streets, we keep addiction from spreading", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a press relesae. I have no doubt that will save lives.

According to the DEA, 9,015,668 pounds, or 4,508 tons of prescription drugs have been collected since the fall of 2010. "Kansans continue to recognize the importance of safely disposing of their unused medicines during these semi-annual Drug Take-Back events".

"The success of DEA's fall Take-Back indicates people are learning how unsafe the abuse of prescription pills, particularly opioid painkillers, can be and are taking the right step to reduce the amount of pills that make it onto the streets", he said.

"The state of Utah is suffering from this epidemic and we wanted to make sure all 29 counties were covered in this initiative", DEA District Agent in Charge Brian Besser said.
