Dad fires gun, stops teens from kidnapping daughter

A father in Florida has been named a hero after he confronted a group of teenagers who attempted to kidnap his 17-year-old daughter.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said their investigation revealed the teens planned to kidnap the father's daughter.

A short time later, her 51-year-old father saw his floodlights activate, heard his dogs bark and a auto door slam, so he grabbed his gun. Police believe they put the barrels at the end of the driveway to try to force her out of her vehicle so they could then grab her.

Arming himself with a gun, the 51-year-old went outside to investigate, discovering the group of attempted kidnappers trying to force their way into his garage. The homeowner fired his weapon and the intruders fled into the woods.

Helicopter footage shows that the driver reached high speeds throughout the chase and drove through fields to escape officers. He weaved through neighborhoods, squeezed through gates and went to wrong way down the road, barely missing oncoming traffic.

A neighbor fortunately saw a suspicious vehicle near her home around the same timeframe and told deputies. The father later learned they unscrewed some of his security lights. The teens were reportedly armed with knives and guns, and police found tape, latex gloves, masks and dark clothing in their possession. When that didn't work they then planned to head to her house, confront and subdue her father - who they believed to be wealthy - and rob the home, officials wrote.

The intruder entered the home through a window or door that was unlocked and took the sleeping girl out of her bed, carrying her upstairs from the basement and making noises that awoke the girl's parents. Police set up a search for the suspect, and caught him after he went into a second home, where the residents called police.

Johnson has been booked into the Okaloosa County Jail, while the other three were transfered to a juvenile justice facility.

Instead all four defendants are now charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted home invasion robbery.
