Here's the full list of MTV EMA 2017 winners

The 33-year-old hip-hop artist was performing his track Unforgettable at the awards ceremony at London's SSE Arena on Sunday night, when a banner-waving man suddenly emerged on the stage.

In a first for the EMAs, which were created in 1994, MTV announced categories stripped of gender in a bid to "break barriers".

The evening was opened by U.S. rapper Eminem, with a duet with Skylar Grey on the song Walk on Water. He received the awards for Biggest Fans, Best Song for "There's Nothing Holding Me Back", Best Artist and Best Canadian Act.

Singer Camila Cabello, who won the best-pop prize, performed "Havana" with a troupe of dancers dressed as bathing beauties around a realistic projection of a pool.

Taylor Swift, who was expected to be one of the big winners of the night with six nominations, failed to win any awards. Mendes had been expected to fare well, going into the EMAs with five nominations, and was a triple victor, taking the "biggest fans" accolade in addition to best song and artist.

Eminem was also named best hip-hop artist, and proclaimed surprise.

Other big-name winners included Ed Sheeran, for best live act, and Dua Lipa, for best new performer.

U2 were crowned the Global Icon, with Bono singing a burst of Stormzy's "Blinded By Your Grace" as they collected the trophy.

Irish rockers U2 got a global icon award and footage of their concert recorded the previous evening in London's Trafalgar Square, was played.

This year saw the MTV Europe Music Awards return to London for the first time since 1996. Rita Ora is hosting and performing, while Beer is appearing as a presenter.
