Indians form second largest group of intl students in US

In 2016-2017, as many as 7,143 students from Bangladesh were studying in the USA, registering a almost 10% growth from the previous year, a United States report said on Monday.

While the number of worldwide students has decreased by 7%, American students studying aboard have also increased by 4%, in comparison to past year.

Meanwhile, Nepal and Bangladesh saw the biggest increases in students attending US colleges, though their overall numbers are still low.

The annual Open Doors report from the Institute of International Education dropped this morning, and the news isn't super for US colleges and universities.

Noting that students continue to be attracted to the high quality and diverse opportunities offered by United States colleges and universities, he said it was critical for U.S. institutions to set strategic goals and be proactive in reaching out to students and families in a wide range of countries in the coming year, and for the USA to keep its academic doors open to students from all over the world.

To learn about current trends - based on students who made the decision to apply and attend USA colleges in 2015 and were already attending class by the fall of 2016 - the Institute conducted a separate online enrollment survey in October with 10 education associations.

The survey also reported about 325,000 USA students studied overseas in 2015-16, mostly in Europe.

"The US higher education sector remains the global leader in welcoming students from around the world, and at the same time, we are committed to increasing opportunities to study overseas for Americans", Grunder said. About a third of worldwide students in the USA hail from China, and almost 200,000 come from India. "We have made a concerted effort to develop programs that focus on the history, culture and environment of particular regions that has made studying overseas more accessible to a variety of student populations".

Cross-border terror attack from Afghanistan kills two Pak soldiers
Afghanistan, which does not recognise the border, has lately been angry over a Pakistani plan to build a fence along most of it. "Terrorists from the Afghanistan side attempted an attack on Pakistani posts along the Pak-Afghan border in Bajaur Agency".

Way back in June, I knocked out a quick story on the 2018 QS World University Rankings mostly because things were slow on the higher ed beat but also because four N.C. schools made the list. The state's fall 2015 enrollment was a 5.6 percent increase from the prior year. Their top destinations were the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and France.

Many institutions have responded to the shifting social and political situation through a series of actions, such as alerting students about changes in USA policies (65 percent), issuing statements in support of worldwide students (63 percent), and creating opportunities to discuss current US events (54 percent).

The national decline in new foreign students was more pronounced this fall, according to a survey of 522 colleges by the organization, the report says.

The one positive news from 2016 is that more foreign students are staying in the United States after they finish their degrees to continue learning through internship programs called "optional practical training".

The top fields of study for Ohio State students studying overseas are business, health professions, engineering, biological and biomedical sciences, social sciences and agriculture, whereas the national trend includes science, technology, engineering and mathematics, business, social sciences, and foreign language and global studies. Open Doors 2017 reports that about two thirds of all worldwide students funded their education through personal and family sources as well as assistance from their home country governments or universities.

At Ohio State, International Education Week is celebrated with a number of activities supported by the Office of International Affairs, which oversees Ohio State's education overseas programs and international student and scholar services.

"International student exchange is an essential contributor to AmericaÂ's economic competitiveness and national security", said Alyson L Grunder, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Policy in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Thanks to that program, a record 1.08 million worldwide students were enrolled in United States institutions of higher learning in 2016.

The largest enrollment growth was from global students who have graduated but remain classified as students at universities with student visas while working under the optional practical training program.
