Slain Green Beret Melgar Murdered After Discovery of SEAL Embezzlement

On the morning of June 4, 2017, the Navy SEALs-turned suspects said Melgar had lost consciousness and stopped breathing, and that he had been drunk.

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the special operations community, two members of the elite SEAL Team Six have since been accused of strangling their fellow USA serviceman.

A pair of Navy SEALs on a secret mission in Mali may have strangled a Green Beret soldier after he stumbled upon their plot to siphon cash from confidential informants, according to a Daily Beast report.

Melgar didn't give her any more details over email, instead telling her that he'd give her the full story once he was home.

AFRICOM did not immediately announce Melgar's death following the discovery of his body in Bamako, despite commands' habit of announcing combat and noncombat deaths: According to The Daily Beast, then-U.S.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) are still piecing together the chain of events that led to his death.

In a panic the SEALs attempted to open an airway in Melgar's throat, officials said. He was rushed to a French clinic in Mali by another Green Beret and the two SEALs, but was already dead on arrival.

However, the SEALs apparently didn't realize that an autopsy would determine if alcohol or drugs were found in Melgar's system.

Military officials told CNN that a military examiner ruled Melgar's death while on assignment in the African nation of Mali as a homicide.

The incident has threatened to stain the reputation of SEAL Team Six, the elite unit that carried out the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden. However, the two SEALs at the center of the investigation were quickly flown out of Mali following the indicent and have been placed on administrative leave, according to The Daily Beast.

"It looks like a sloppy attempt to sweep this under the rug", one SOCOM official, who asked to remain anonymous due to the ongoing investigation surrounding Melgar's death, told Task & Purpose.

Melgar, a 34-year-old Texan, deployed to Afghanistan twice. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that Melgar graduated from Texas Tech in 2006 and that he enlisted in 2012, joining the Army as an "18X" - an off-the-street Special Forces recruit.
