US Navy aircraft carriers operate off Korean Peninsula

South Korean warships joined three US aircraft carriers Saturday in an unusually strong display of naval force aimed at North Korea, whose nuclear ambitions have been a focus of US President Donald Trump's ongoing tour of Asia.

"Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula", the nation's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Trump is in Vietnam as part of a almost two-week tour of Asia, and North Korea's nuclear weapons program has been a major talking point with his Japanese, South Korean and Chinese counterparts.

"The future of this region and its handsome people must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail", he said during a speech in Vietnam at the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Trump continued his tough talk against Pyongyang on Friday in a speech to business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Danang, Vietnam, saying that the region's future "must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail", referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump will attend a state banquet on Saturday before a welcoming and deal-signing ceremony on Sunday morning.

In a fresh show of force, three USA aircraft carriers, accompanied by South Korean warships, launched a joint naval drill yesterday.

South Korean military said it's the first time since 2007 that the three battle groups of the USS Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt and the Nimitz have operated together in the Western Pacific.

During Saturday's summit, Moon and Xi also agreed to quickly normalise bilateral exchanges in all sectors, reiterating an agreement announced last month to end a year-long standoff over the deployment of a United States anti-missile system.

Tensions have been running high since North Korea test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 and flew ballistic missiles over Japan on August 29 and September 15.

Trump attempted a symbolic stare-down of Kim this week at the heavily fortified border that separates North and South Korea, but heavy fog forced the cancellation of his plans.

It also flew two new midrange missiles over Japan and threatened to launch them toward Guam, a US Pacific territory and military hub.
