DC Comics Editor Fired Following Sexual Assault Claims

DC Comics Editor Fired Following Sexual Assault Claims

DC Entertainment has immediately suspended Mr. Berganza and has removed him from performing his duties as Group Editor at DC Comics.

Berganza had worked with DC since the early 1990s.

Warner Bros. and its DC Entertainment brand reached out to Buzzfeed to say the firing of Berganza is an example that the company is, "committed to eradication harassment". His photo was included on the cover of Saturday's New York Daily News, alongside the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K., in an article on the recent wave of sexual misconduct allegations against powerful men in the entertainment industry, headlined "Perv Nation". The article alleged that Berganza had been engaging in the behavior for years but rose through the comic book publisher's ranks despite his alleged actions.

DC editor Liz Gehrlein Marsham went on record saying that Berganza tried to grope her and frequently kissed her and invaded her space when she was a young editor at the company. In 2012 he was reportedly demoted from executive editor to group editor after being accused of trying to forcibly kiss a female during a comic book convention held in Anaheim, California.

She added he attempted to grope her later on in the evening too.

Episode Zero features Joseph Stallion (not Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin), Jessica Valiant and Gerald Wilkins. It takes Stallion from the ruins of Chicago, to "the vastness of space".

The accusations first came to light in a piece on Buzzfeed, which reported that DC promoted Berganza even after at least two women allegedly reported that he forcibly kissed and grope them. And then in 2010, former DC editor Janelle Asselin organized a group of employees to file a joint complaint to HR about Berganza.

In a 2012 email to his fellow editors Berganza wrote: 'You have my word, I will not allow this to happen again.

In response to this news DC said in a statement: 'DC and Warner Bros are unequivocally committed to cultivating a work environment of dignity and respect, one that is safe and harassment free for all employees'.

With regards to Berganza directly they said: 'There will be a prompt and yet careful review into next steps [relating] to the allegations against him, and the concerns our talent, employees and fans have shared'.

The statement did not appear to address whether current DC editor-in-chief Bob Harras or other staff knew about the allegations against Berganza before the BuzzFeed report.
