Hampshire Police joining national firearms surrender

During the surrender period, those handing in firearms or ammunition will not be arrested for illegal possession at the point of surrender and they can remain anonymous. So, removing weapons, even if they're not used, off the street, out of the lofts, into a safe place into a safe place is in everybody's interest.

"Any weapon has the potential to fall into the wrong hands, so each one surrendered is one less with the potential to cause a death or serious injury".

Mums, sisters and girlfriends of boys and men who carry guns and knives in Sheffield are being urged to hand in the weapons in a bid to save their lives.

The two-week surrender gives members of the public the chance to dispose of a firearm or ammunition by taking it to a local designated police station and handing it in.

Cmdr. Gyeford said this was a gun surrender, and not an amnesty, and the weapons which were handed in would be forensically tested to see if they had been used in any crimes and individuals would be prosecuted if they were linked to shootings.

"By participating in the surrender, people can be confident that items have been safely disposed of".

The National Gun Surrender will run until 26 November and police are calling for people to hand in air guns, rifles, BB guns, shotguns and pistols, including antiques.

Detective Inspector Jackie Dadd said: "As part of a coordinated national campaign to stop guns falling into the wrong hands, we are joining police forces across the country to help people dispose of guns safely, especially those who have inherited or come into the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Remember that outside of the surrender period if police find you in possession of a firearm without a current certificate then you may be subject of court proceedings which may lead to a custodial sentence".

The national effort involving forces across the United Kingdom is giving members of the public the opportunity to hand in any illegal or unwanted weapons - without prosecution.

Launching the drive in the Northwest, Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle, of Greater Manchester Police, said the public should be anxious about the supply of guns on the UK's streets.

If you know of anyone involved with illegal firearms call police on 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers (anonymously) on 0800 555 111.

If someone is unable to travel to a police station they should contact police via 101 and arrange for the firearm to be collected.
