Robbers dig 50-feet tunnel to rob bank

As to the reports, the thieves had rented a shop located near the bank about six months ago.

In a heinous act, a group of robbers dug a 50-feet tunnel to break the wall of the Bank of Baroda's branch in Juninagar area of Navi Mumbai. "The thieves rented out the adjoining shop since May 2017".

The police officer said there are 225 lockers are there in the bank, out of which 30 were found empty.

While it is not clear when the incident took place as the bank was closed on Saturday and Sunday, the matter came to light only when a customer of Bank of Baroda had to go to his locker to deposit some valuables. In 2014, a similar incident occurred, where the perpetrators dug a tunnel leading to the locker room of Punjab National Bank's Sonepat branch, and robbed valuables worth crores from 89 lockers.

The Bank of Baroda branch occupies shops one to four in Bhakti Residency, opposite Juinagar Railway Station in Sector 11, with the fourth shop housing the ATM cubicle and locker room. The bank, incidentally, had not installed CCTV cameras in the locker room to protect the customer's privacy. It's an open secret that private banks usually demand heavy investments by customers (usually as fixed deposits or mutual funds) in exchange of pushing their names up in the "waiting list".
