West Bengal gets Geographical Indication status for rosogulla

West Bengal on Tuesday, November 14, may just have won the bragging rights for the claim of the origin of the Rasgulla, after the iconic sweetmeat that has come to be associated so closely with the state and its inhabitants was awarded the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the official patent registrars.

As per the reports, From 2015 Odisha and West Bengal indulge into the bitter fight over the GI registration of rosogolla. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.

When contacted, Head of office of Geographical Indications Intellectual Property India Chinnaraja G. Naidu confirmed that the GI tag had been given to both.

With news of Bengal's victory, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is at present on a tour of London, twitted "Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla". Their key argument was that the Bengalis learnt how to make the chhena - the cottage cheese which is the chief ingredient of rosogulla - from the Portuguese and were the first to experiment with it for their candies. While WB government quoting a 19-century history claim stating that rosogolla was invented by Nabin Chandra Das, a noted sweet maker of his time. We are all so happy.

The first committee would look into facts and evidence regarding the origin of Rasgulla in Odisha, the second would study the ground, based on which West Bengal is making its claim.

Protests in NZ as Ardern talks Manus
Ardern said she raised the issue with Turnbull in passing, but they have not discussed it further. Ms Ardern said it was faster to organise the logistics of any deal with Australia.

The Geographical Identification authorities ruled out today that it is Bengal where the popular rosogolla originated.

It is this kind of Rasagolla that has received the GI tag.

Rosogulla has finally been lapped up by West Bengal and now the argument will finally be laid to rest.
