Phil Jones Out Of England's Friendly With Brazil

England boss Gareth Southgate makes five changes to his starting lineup for the friendly worldwide with Brazil.

Joe Hart was needed to make a save from a Gabriel Jesus header, but the tempo of the game struggled to match the occasional noise stemming from the samba band inside the stadium.

Southgate also had plenty of praise for the resilient defender, saying, "Joe's performance tonight against top players - really, I thought a lot of the defending was outstanding but for him in particular, to come into a game like that with the little experience he has, it was a top, top performance".

Southgate is "staging a quiet revolution" by proving to be his own man and showing he will be the manager on "his terms", says the BBC's Phil McNulty.

"I'm satisfied with our game, we didn't give chances to our opponents, we tried to create them". "I'm more proud of them tonight as I think we've played the best team in the world, with their best team out. We've come out with a really credible result".

A long-range strike from Fernandinho shaved the post and Neymar fed Paulinho, who was denied at the near post by England goalkeeper Joe Hart. As a group what they have given will stand them in good stead. We had the best defensive record in Europe in qualifying and we have played the best two teams in the world and not conceded.

"Tonight we looked anxious with the ball", Southgate said, "and I think that is a outcome of the threat from Brazil".

"We have scored many goals this year but not today because England played really well, blocking our offence".

England and Brazil will be traveling to the World Cup next year trying to erase painful memories of the 2014 tournament.

But at least both sides have qualified for Russian Federation next year, unlike four-time champion Italy.
