Mahira Khan's 'Verna' banned in Pakistan?

Recently the actress was asked in an interview regarding the ban placed on Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor's film Verna. A censor certificate is obligatory for a film to be released.

The film, which is due to release this Friday, has run into trouble after it was first reported that the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) had banned its release following its viewing.

Verna focuses on the topic of rape which is considered a taboo topic in Pakistan and features the story of a resilient young woman against an influential individual.

A report on The Express Tribune quoted the Sindh Board of Film Censors (SBFC) general secretary Abdul Razzaq Khuhawar as saying, "The topic is rape, and the culprit is the governor's son".

She said that the no movie yet nor any movie has been censored by the politicians, "Verna" will be permitted to release after completion of all necessary documentation, she added. However, a final decision is expected to be taken later after a screening amongst the board. More updates on that are still awaited.

Khuhawar also shared that the SBFC will be able to certify the film only after CBFC Islamabad's decision. The movie is the comeback project of filmmaker Shoaib Mansoor and was set to hit the screens on November 17, but it is being called objectionable because of its content.

A top official of the CBFC said the board members had watched the film. Its subject tackles with rape and how the protagonist, played by Khan fights for her rights.

Whereas the 32-year-old Mahira Khan was also part of "Bol" which was her debut film.
