Target launches in-app mobile payments system

United States retailer Target has embraced the mobile payments revolution with the launch of "Wallet", a proprietary app that enables shoppers to check out in store via their smartphone by scanning product barcodes.

With Wallet in the Target app, customers are able to pay using their Target REDcard, and combine it with savings from Target's Cartwheel offers and weekly ad coupons, through their smartphones.

If you've been wondering why Target hasn't yet adopted the use of the likes of Apple Pay in its stores, you know have your answer. At Target (as with Walmart), this is essentially the only way you can do this as the retailer doesn't accept Apple Pay or Android Pay. Shoppers will also receive five percent back by using the Target REDcard, which can be pre-uploaded to the app.

The Target Wallet app will let you make mobile payments with the Target REDCard and it is available in the Target App in Android and iOS. "These "open the app, find the pay tab, and scan" services will be slower unless they find a way to skip steps and match the speed of NFC".

Target's new Wallet feature has been rolling out for a few weeks now, but is now live for everyone. What is new is the ability to use those coupons and checkout with your card with one scan of your barcode.

We'd certainly love to see Target add support for Apple Pay in-stores as well, but given the amount of work the retail giant has put into integrating mobile payments, Red Card, and Cartwheel, we don't see that happening any time soon, unfortunately.

Both Target and Walmart are retailers who are part of CurrentC - a group of retailers with their own mobile payment solution. Eventually, customers will be able to store and redeem their Target GiftCards with Wallet also.
