Artist Lubaina Himid wins 2017 Turner Prize

Lubaina Himid has won the Turner Prize for what judges describe as her "expansive and exuberant approach to painting, which combines satire and a sense of theatre".

At 62-years-old, Himid becomes the oldest person to ever win the Turner Prize, 2017 being the first year since the introduction of a rule change allowing artists over the age of 50 to compete.

The African artist, now Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire, is best known for her paintings, drawings, printmaking, and installations that centre on black identity, her works making reference to the African diaspora and the slave industry. At 63, the Tanzanian-born artist is the oldest of this year's nominees.

Himid is a professor of contemporary art at the University of Central Lancashire.

Since the 1980s, Himid has focused on a range of subjects related to race, from matters of the African diaspora to the visibility of black artists in museums.

Himid thanked those who gave her sustenance during her "wilderness years", The Guardian reported.

She said that winning the prize meant a lot to her.

British musician Goldie presented the award, praising the political views expressed by all the shortlisted contestants' work: "It's good that the artists are digging deep... challenging people's perceptions".

Founded in 1984, the annual Turner Prize is regarded as the UK's most important art award. Not only does it provide a cash bonus, the award also tends to significantly boost the public profile of its winners.

The works of all four shortlisted artists are on display at Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, the former industrial city which is now a City of Culture. Previous winners are a who's-who of contemporary art and include Gilbert and George, Anish Kapoor, Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili, Steve McQueen, Grayson Perry, and Laure Prouvost. A further £5,000 is awarded to each of the other shortlisted artists.

Himid beat British painter Hurvin Anderson, whose images often draw on his Caribbean heritage; German-born multidisciplinary artist Andrea Buttner; and Palestinian-English artist Rosalind Nashashibi. She planned to go to law school but she did terribly on the LSAT, so she got a master's in art history instead.
