Aussie official: Serena Williams has entered to play

Serena Williams is set to make her tennis comeback at the Australian Open with her return to Melbourne for the season's opening Grand Slam "very likely".

She gave birth to a girl in September and has taken to the practice courts in preparation for a return in 2018.

The 36-year-old has not played since winning last year's tournament in Melbourne - when she was pregnant with her first child.

However, at a Tennis Australia event on Wednesday, the Australian Open's tournament director, Craig Tiley, was optimistic of Williams defending her Melbourne title and continuing in her quest to break Margaret Court's all-time singles record of 24 grand slams.

"We are expecting the AO Game to be a sell-out so we urge fans to get their tickets quickly and come along and enjoy a great day at the tennis, followed by a night at the basketball", Loelinger said. "There's no question she'll be ready in our view".

Tennis and basketball fans will get the best of both worlds when Melbourne United host an NBL match at Hisense Arena during next year's Australian Open.

Serena Williams poses with the Daphne Akhurst Trophy after beating sister Venus to win the 2017 Australian Open. "Roger Federer travels with his four kids and we are a family-friendly event", he said, referring to Williams and her baby.
