Keyboard maker AI.type exposes 31M customer records in latest database breach

Unfortunately, a "popular" keyboard by the name of Ai.Type didn't think so, leaking more than 31 million users' data simply because it didn't protect its own database with a password.

The database, which appeared to contain information exclusively from Android users, belonged to AI.type co-founder Eitan Fitusi.

Security experts from Kromtech Security Center who discovered the breach said the company's database wasn't secure with a password, meaning the data was easily accessible to hackers and anyone else who may have inadvertently stumbled across it. It totaled more than 577 gigabytes in size and contained information including users' full names, a list of applications installed on the phone, email addresses, precise location (including city and country), and how many days users have had the application installed. He said it contained secondary information that was "mostly statistical behavior information, about user use patterns of the keyboard".

AI.type says on its website that user's privacy 'is our main concern'.

Furthermore, security researcher Bob Diachenko noted that the app seemed to hoover up quite a lot of data for what would appear to be a simple keyboard tool. At this point, Kromtech warns that anyone who had ever downloaded and installed ai.type keyboard should consider their data out in the open. "This presents a real danger to cybercriminals who could commit fraud or scams using such detailed information about the user".

"It raises the question once again if it is really worth it for consumers to submit their data in exchange for free or discounted products or services that gain full access to their devices", he added.

Amazon launches subscription-based Prime service in Singapore
It offers users benefits such as rebates and discounts for RedMart, Netflix, Uber, UberEats and Taobao Collection. Lazada had launched its own subscription-based customer loyalty program LiveUp in Singapore in April.

Users on the free version have more data farmed from their usage than that of the paid version - a statement made clear in its privacy policy.

More complete records also include the device's IMSI and IMEI number, the device's make and model, its screen resolution, and the device's specific Android version. "This also exposed just how much data they access and how they obtain a treasure trove of data that average users do not expect to be extracted or data mined from their phone or tablet". Other records included information from linked Google profiles including profile pictures, email addresses, dates of birth and genders.

Another day, another misconfigured database exposing customer data online.

ZDNet said it also found several tables of contact data uploaded from a user's phone, one with 10.7 million email addresses and another with 374.6 million phone numbers. "Some want to sell the data they collect, others use it for targeted marketing, predictive artificial intelligence, and cyber criminals want to use it to make money in more and more creative ways".

AI.type also states that it will "never share your data or learn from password fields" but, as ZDNet highlights, there was a table with 8.6 million entries of sensitive information logged and stored via the keyboard.
