Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: 'Shkodran Mustafi an injury doubt for Saints clash'

Arsenal lock horns with BATE Borisov at Emirates Stadium for their Uefa Europa League duel on Thursday night.

Mustafi, who had been in impressive form of late, was replaced by Alex Iwobi after only 15 minutes of the 3-1 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday [2 December] due to an injury sustained following a costly blunder that led to the visitors' second early goal.

Speaking prior to the BATE Borisov game, Wenger confirmed that Mustafi's injury is only minor, and the German could feature against Southampton or West Ham United next week. "We have just a small problem with Mustafi from Saturday, but everybody else looks alright". He's got a little thigh problem, but it's a small one.

Wilshere has so far played in every Europa League match but is yet to start a Premier League game for the North Londoners this term. "If not Southampton it will be West Ham".

However, Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk are still fighting it out for the other place in the knockout stages of the competition. The draw for the round of 16 takes place at UEFA's headquarters in Nyom in Switzerland on Monday.

A number of regulars are likely to be rested for tonight's European outing, and the match offers an opportunity to the likes of Rob Holding, Per Mertesacker and Mathieu Debuchy to earn much-needed gametime at the heart of the backline.

The Gunners have already topped Group H and have done so without turning to several of their first-team players.

On Thursday, however, they play host to a BATE Borisov side who need to pick up three points to keep alive their hopes of reaching the round of 32.

The Gunners are at the start of the busiest period of the domestic season and have six more Premier League fixtures to play before the end of December. "We'll play quite an experienced team tomorrow".
