Lupe Valdez Is Running for Governor

Democrat Lupe Valdez, who has resigned as Dallas County sheriff and declared her candidacy for governor of Texas, often underscores her family's background as migrant farm workers. She and Gov. Greg Abbott have sparred before over immigration practices the governor has criticized as "sanctuary city" policies.

Meanwhile, candidates for Valdez's soon-to-be-vacant sheriff's job are lining up. State law prohibits her from holding one office while running for another.

Valdez is now serving her fourth term as Dallas County sheriff, and drew national headlines when she was first elected in 2004 as the nation's first openly gay Hispanic sheriff.

Just before noon at the Texas Democratic Party headquarters, Valdez will make the official announcement.

Valdez, 70, has been the Dallas County sheriff for 12 years, after earlier careers as a prison guard, a federal Customs agent and a Department of Homeland Security investigator and supervisor.

Over the past year, Valdez has attacked the state's anti-sanctuary cities law, Senate Bill 4, which Abbott has lauded as a measure to improve public safety.

Aussie official: Serena Williams has entered to play
The 36-year-old has not played since winning last year's tournament in Melbourne - when she was pregnant with her first child. She gave birth to a girl in September and has taken to the practice courts in preparation for a return in 2018.

Others who have filed as Democrats to challenge Abbott include Houston electronics businessman Joe Mumbach, Dallas financial analyst Adrian Ocegueda, retired Flint teacher Grady Yarbrough, former Balch Springs mayor Cedric Davis Sr. and San Antonio businessman Tom Wakely.

We haven't independently corroborated such details though we've emailed Valdez's campaign to elicit more detail.

Abbott, who is facing re-election for the first time, approaches next year's midterm elections in a better position than few other incumbent governors in the U.S. He has no serious GOP primary challenger and already has more than $40 million in campaign funds socked away. "Abbott may have the money - we're going to have the people".

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins reacted to the announcement Wednesday via Twitter, thanking Valdez for her leadership.

Valdez is easily the most high-profile Democrat to throw her hat in the ring for 2018-Democrats couldn't talk either of the Castros, Dallas representative Rafael Anchia, or actor Eva Longoria into what is likely to be a doomed campaign-and the all but certain victor of her party's primary.
