New details of Uber hack and bug bounty cover-up come to light

A Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter claims that a 20 year-old from Florida was responsible for Uber's 2016 data breach.

You can potentially understand the panic and attempt to hush it up - especially in light of how much controversy Uber has courted in the past few years - but with the information of so many users at stake who trust the company, this is a awful failure and was a huge mistake which may be extremely hard to recover from.

According to three unnamed sources, as reported by Reuters, a 20-year-old was responsible for the catastrophic data breach, rather than a sophisticated group or state-sponsored team. Uber's bug bounty service is hosted by HackerOne, a company that connects security researchers with companies. Sources familiar with the hack have told Reuters that the payment was made through a program created to reward bug hunters who report flaws.

Uber spokesman Matt Kallman declined to comment to Reuters. Uber paid him $100,000 through a "bug bounty" program to destroy the data, Reuters said.

Dara Khosrowshahi, who replaced Mr Kalanick in August, made details of the leak public, adding: "none of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it". The bounty program is meant to reward security researchers who bring bugs to the company's attention so that a fix can be put into place.

HackerOne hosts Uber's bug bounty program but does not manage it, and plays no role in deciding whether payouts are appropriate or how large they should be. HackerOne's CEO said that he couldn't discuss an individual customer's programs.

KitGuru Says: The Uber hack was clearly handled poorly, particularly since paying off data thieves encourages others to attempt the same thing. Officials for Connecticut, Illinois and MA also confirmed they're investigating the hack.

The most interesting part, which is hacker's description according to a source - "Living with his mom in a small home trying to help pay the bills".
