PlayStation 4 surpasses 70 million units sold

The Sony PS4 1TB was on sale for $199 during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales events.

The 2 million PlayStation VR units sold also makes the company a real player in virtual reality, an area that Facebook's Oculus, Steam and HTC's Vive and the Samsung Gear VR are trying to carve out. No other console has attained these many sales in such a short amount of time, not even the Playstation PS4. And while on the subject of software, 617.8 million copies of PlayStation 4 games have been sold at retailers across the world and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store.

Nintendo's Switch console has had a solid year in sales after 2.5 million units were sold in Japan since its release back in March, making it the most sold console system of the year in the country.

"We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction", said Andrew House, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in a statement.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Miramar desert map revealed
However, with Miramar's limited waters, it's hard to say there would be a major advantage over a boat on that map. The game will come to Xbox One on December 12 , and it's now available in Early Access on Steam.

To say that these numbers are impressive would be an understatement. While the console has hit a solid stride, its first year and a half were extremely sluggish due to the lack of games dedicated to the Japanese market, following by a large cross-generation period in which games released also on PS3 reduced the attractiveness of the new console.

Sony launched the PS4 in November 2013 and quickly established a firm lead over its leading competitor, the Xbox One. The $100 Black Friday discount helped sales of the PSVR as well.

Going into 2018, Sony will continue to build on it's 2017 momentum with a slew of exclusive titles.
