Rye Fire burning near Six Flags grows to 7000 acres

The so-called Rye Fire was burning in light to medium fuels amid heavy winds, adding to two other large wildfires burning simultaneously in Southern California.

The fire shut down northbound and southbound Interstate 5 near Highway 126 for several hours as smoke and embers made it hard for traffic to move through the area.

Firefighters have made some progress against the Rye Fire, which has burned 7,000 acres in Santa Clarita.

In addition, the Simi Valley Police Department announced that schools in the Simi Valley Unified School District will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 6.

State officials requested a Fire Management Assistance Declaration for the Rye Fire on Tuesday, which was approved at 3:45 p.m. the same day, according to FEMA officials. Eastbound lanes of Newhall Ranch Road remained closed.
